Dane County is the perfect place to raise a family, as there are numerous communities that have excellent schools, tons of recreational options, and easy access to amenities. If you’re thinking about moving with your family to Madison or one of its suburbs, these are the best Dane County communities for families.
Middleton
Often called the ‘Good Neighbor City’, Middleton consistently wins top ranking on CNN Money’s Best Places to Live in America list. Although it’s just a 20-minute drive from downtown Madison, Middleton has a safe, small-town feel. Families will love its numerous parks, bike trails and scenic location on the shores of Lake Mendota. The city also has multiple restaurants and shops, a golf course, and a lakeside park with camping facilities.
Waunakee
Waunakee has a real community-oriented atmosphere with plenty to offer people of all ages including a skateboard park, skating rink, and community center with fitness facilities. The annual WaunaFest event brings together neighbors and friends with fun games, rides and sporting events. Parents will be happy to know that the Waunakee Community School District is renowned for its programs that focus on academic excellence for students starting from age four and up.
Verona
Verona is known as ‘Hometown USA’ thanks to its family-friendly atmosphere. Located just 10 miles southwest of Madison, the community has a wide array of real estate for all budgets, great schools, and plenty of areas for indoor and outdoor recreation. Families can explore the many bike trails, catch a show at the community theater, or throw some balls or sticks for four-legged family members at the Prairie Moraine Dog Park.
Springfield
If you’re looking for a picturesque place to raise a family with plenty of outdoor space, look no further than Springfield. This agricultural community has numerous acreages for sale where you can build your dream home, farmette or equestrian estate. Many properties are located on wooded lots and surrounded by rolling hills, meaning your family can be close to nature while still being in the Madison Metropolitan Area.
Westport
With its prime location on the northern shore of Lake Mendota, Westport offers waterfront living at its best. Many waterfront homes have direct access to the water and private docks where you can launch boats. The whole family can spend the summers cooling off in the clear water, kayaking along the shore, and simply enjoying the beautiful views. Even if you don’t opt for a waterfront home, you can still enjoy lakefront areas such as Governor Nelson State Park and Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park.
Maple Bluff
Maple Bluff is an upscale suburb of Madison that is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Mendota. This charming village is the home of the Wisconsin Governor's Mansion and it offers a wide array of homes including historic homesteads, contemporary builds and waterfront estates. Families who settle in Maple Bluff will have easy access to the lake, downtown Madison and a great selection of public and private schools.
