Nearby subdivisions include a tree-shrouded hilltop concealing striking architect-built homes and one of the area’s first energy efficient housing developments. Traditional homes, old and new alike, can be found throughout the area, offering a surprising range of living choices in neighborhoods such as Cedar Hill, Enchanted Valley View, Glacial Valley, Scenic Edge, St. Francis, and Woodside Hills. Local resident Randy B, manager for a specialty food store on Madison’s Monroe Street, relocated his family from the endless suburbs of California’s San Fernando Valley to a home in a newer Cross Plains subdivision. He says choosing Cross Plains was simple. “I wanted my kids to know what it’s like to live in the country. The commute is a lot easier than anything you’d find in LA. I could never do something like this in California. It’s a lot quieter out here, too.”
Historic downtown Cross Plains features what may be the only marked “gopher crossing” in the state, a crosswalk leading to a classic Wisconsin tavern, one with its own bowling lanes. The home offices of the Ice Age Scenic Trail Foundation share the same building as one of the area’s leading fly-fishing shops, perfectly located so anglers can gear up for blue ribbon trout stream Black Earth Creek. The area is also noted for turkey and white-tail deer hunting. Cross Plains boasts seven local parks totaling approximately 25 acres.
The town is the nominal half of the highly regarded Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District where you’ll find two elementary schools and a middle school. Elementary and middle-schoolers attend class in town, while high school students travel to Middleton.
