The Town of Springfield is a rural, primarily agricultural, community north of Lake Mendota. This portion of the Madison Metropolitan area is non-urbanized and largely undeveloped. The wide open spaces and rolling topography is populated with several active large and small farms, treed hillsides, and multiple wetlands, including the very large Springfield Marsh and Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Because Springfield is bordered by the growing municipalities of Waunakee to the East and Middleton to the south, Springfield has strong anti-sprawl policies. It has, however, permitted a generous distribution of clustered housing developments throughout the township.
