Belleville, WI History
The Village of Belleville developed around the Sugar River mill site that John Frederick founded when he settled here in 1845. It included a hotel with a tavern, blacksmith, harness maker, and general store.
An octagon-shaped school followed two years later which housed several church congregations. By 1851 the village was platted and named for Frederick's home town in Canada. The following year a post office was established.
By the mid 1860s Swiss, Irish and French groups had acquired much of the adjacent farm lands. The 70s and 80s brought a spurt of new growth including a library, opera house and railroad. By 1900 the steadily growing village had acquired a fire department and high school.
