The official Fitchburg slogan asks people to "Get to know us!" Geographically separated from its neighbors on three sides by major thoroughfares, Fitchburg city leaders just want you to know there’s a whole world south of Madison proper. Centrally located just ten minutes from downtown Madison, the Capitol, and UW, Dane County’s second largest city boasts more than 25,000 citizens spread across 35 square miles of rolling hills and prairies.
Fitchburg’s relative youth—the city was incorporated in 1983—means the housing supply consists mostly of newer and luxury Fitchburg homes, though in a surprising diversity of styles and prices. You can expect to find beautiful Fitchburg executive estates, ranch-style homes and custom-built new construction homes.
Fitchburg's popular Seminole neighborhoods, named for Seminole Highway (actually an avenue) that bisects the city, includes multiple subdivisions such as Highlands of Seminole, Seminole Forest, Seminole Hills, and Seminole Village Condominiums.
Although Fitchburg features numerous modern amenities and hundreds of newly constructed homes, the city is still rich with history. There are five sites throughout the city that are currently registered on the National Register of Historic Places including historic Mann House (Quivey’s Grove), as well as the 13 original buildings from the Wisconsin Industrial School for Girls.
The Fitchburg Community
Fitchburg is a great place to grow up. It’s a smaller community located right outside of Madison with really friendly neighbors. The area is beautiful with mature trees, well manicured yards, and interesting looking homes. Many of the neighborhoods in Fitchburg, such as the Seminole neighborhoods, are very much communities unto themselves. Each neighborhood in Fitchburg has nice playgrounds to choose from and an abundance of bike paths that are always well-kept.
Fitchburg is home to a surprising 700 businesses. Among them are tech giant CDW (formerly Berbee), local biotech star Promega, and Sub-Zero, manufacturers of commercial and high-end residential kitchen appliances.
The Fitchburg Technology Campus combines business space with residential development and restaurants, by design all within walking distance. The campus is part of the city’s focus on attracting clean, knowledge-based business and industry.
The recently completed interchange at Highway 14 and Lacy Road will provide access to the proposed 450-acre Nine Springs Green Tech Village, planned to have as much as 6 million sq. ft. of office space, retail shops, science and health care businesses, plus 2,000 housing units.
Fitchburg Shopping & Entertainment
While Fitchburg has no real “downtown,” much of the city’s shopping is clustered along and around the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and McKee Road. City planners, however, have taken steps to stem suburban sprawl from shaping the community.
The city’s 576 acres of parks and open spaces further attest to a commitment to livability. Bike trails lace through the community, connecting with diverse points such downtown Madison, Verona and Mount Horeb. On the north side, hikers and nature enthusiasts can enjoy the UW Arboretum, home to the oldest and most varied collection of restored ecological communities in the world. If you’re a bike lover and live in Fitchburg, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to the bike-ability of Fitchburg!
With a burgeoning dining scene, Fitchburg residents don’t feel isolated from nightlife. Quivey’s Grove restaurant serves steaks and regional fare in a historic stone farmhouse and stable. Weekend diners and revelers can be seen waiting in line for brews and eats at the Great Dane Pub. Be sure to check out the walleye dinner frequently offered as a weekend special dinner.
Fitchburg is only a short distance to the local super target, a mall, a handful of nice restaurants, and just minutes away from the Arboretum. You can reach Madison's downtown or University campus in under 15 minutes without resorting to using the Beltline. There's also a neighborhood pool close by (Seminole Pool) that’s open all summer.
The City of Fitchburg falls within the boundaries of three different school districts. Children on Fitchburg's north and west sides attend Madison Metropolitan School District schools. South-side families are served by Oregon's School District. Children who live Fitchburg's west side attend schools in the Verona Area School District. Regardless of where your children attend, school buses stop at almost every corner. The elementary school is close enough to bike or walk to even though busing is offered.
