Mount Horeb WI Real Estate

Mount Horeb, WI

Mt. Horeb, 15 mins west of Verona on US 151, calls itself the “Troll Capital of the World”. But its citizens are friendly, decent folk –- not a troll or ogre among them. The name is for the carved wood statues of the mythical beings scattered along the length of main street, affectionately dubbed “The Trollway”. Founded by Norwegians in the first half of the 1800's, the city kept some of the more whimsical parts of its Scandinavian heritage while forging a tight-knit and still growing community.

Mount Horeb Atmosphere

Downtown streets are lined with authentically restored buildings and Victorian homes, some now occupied by eateries and antique shops. The town’s individuality shines through in places like the Grumpy Troll, a (yes) friendly brew pub serving its national award-winning beers. Nearby, there’s an independent book store featuring local and regional authors. Dining options ranges from drive-throughs to downtown bistros featuring inventive meals made with fresh local ingredients.

Mount Horeb Leisure & Recreation

Just 15 minutes or so west of Epic Systems, the Madison area’s largest private employer, plus other westside area businesses, Mt. Horeb residents can stay as connected to the city as they wish, or they can indulge in the many outdoor recreational opportunities found in the surrounding tree-covered hills – skiing at Tyrol Basin, fishing in blue-ribbon trout stream the Sugar River, and hiking and biking on Military Ridge Trail, a converted railroad.

Tourists and other visitors may be quick to comment on Mt. Horeb’s quirkiness and kitschy charm, but those in the know appreciate the town’s individuality and native charm. Whether you’re looking for a great place to raise a family or to relax in retirement, this is a terrific community.
