Named after Black Earth Creek which passes through it, the Village of Black Earth was platted in 1850. After acquiring a post office and the Milwaukee Mississippi Railroad in 1856, Black Earth was incorporated in 1857. A grist mill and saw mill were later built on the water privileges acquired by John Sweat.
The earliest settlers included Norwegian immigrants in addition to "American" and English settlers. Early development in the community included churches and lodges such as the Ancient Order of Mendota and the Sons of Temperance as well as two hotels. In 1859 a beautiful two-story brick school was built which became the envy of nearby villages.
Black Earth later became a major shipping point for commodities such as grain and livestock. Significant quantities of pork and flour also made their way to the developing "pineries" in northern Wisconsin.
