The Village of McFarland shares much in common with its neighbor Monona up the freeway. But be warned: to see McFarland’s charms, you have to drive south past the petroleum storage tanks on Stoughton Boulevard (US 51). Perched on the eastern shore of Lake Waubesa, the smallest of the region's four lakes, McFarland boasted a population of 7,800 as of the 2010 census. The McFarland slogan, "Come grow with us," reflects the town's congenial personality. Like many of its neighboring communities, McFarland maintains a friendly, small-town atmosphere while offering the advantages of proximity to a large metropolitan area. Nestled between US 51 and Interstate 39/90, McFarland residents have easy access to everything the region has to offer.
Founded in 1852, McFarland homes come in every conceivable style and age. Popular subdivisions include Autumn Grove, Cedar Glade, Country Wood, Fix-Rowley, Highland Oaks, Meredith Heights, Secret Places and Lake Waubesa. You'll find a wide range of McFarland neighborhoods to suit any taste: older, newer, starter homes, spectacular new construction, Waubesa lake homes, homes with lake views, you name it. All offer fast easy access to downtown Madison, neighboring communities, and the surrounding region.
Located on the eastern shore of Lake Waubesa just 12 minutes from the State Capitol, McFarland began life as the home to ice harvesting and commercial fishing operations serving the Chicago market. Once a pre-war resort, the Edwards Park area now sports taverns accessible by boat as well as auto. The town grew rapidly following the 1989 completion of the Beltline, the ring freeway surrounding the metro area's south and west sides. With shopping in its thriving Stoughton Road business district, McFarland is now primarily a bedroom community for people working on the Madison area’s east side. Continued growth is forecast for population, employment, and development in the region over next two decades. The annual McFarland Family Festival partners with local organizations to raise money for local not-for-profits. Attractions and events include a carnival, big top tent, triathlon and music stage, with the weekend-long event culminating with the Festival-Homecoming Parade down Main Street.
The McFarland School District, including Waubesa Elementary, Indian Mound Middle, and McFarland High School, touts its large-district educational opportunities in a small-district atmosphere. Its award-winning programs generate consistent academic achievement. Like the district's website says, it's all about top test scores and happy kids.
