dining out in madison

I don’t know about you, but when I’m thinking of where to go to dinner in Madison I typically check my ideas against Yelp reviews. Sure, sometimes they get it wrong, but most of the time I’ve found that an eatery with a four or five star rating from Yelp reviewers is worth visiting.

The caveat here is to check the dates of the ratings. Sometimes a restaurant will go through a change in ownership or management and go to ca-ca before people have had a chance to review it. So, make sure reviews are current.

Now, on to today’s post on The Free House Pub.

With a four-star rating from Yelp users, there is no ca-ca at Free House Pub, just consistently decent service, good food and an amazing beer selection. Since the weather is warming, we recommend you request a table on the patio. Then, if you can’t make up your mind about what to order, we have a couple of go-to’s that we love: deviled bacon and eggs, the “old standby” burger (Wisconsin cheddar, lettuce, tomato and onion on a Colonial Bakery bun) or anything that comes with the to-die for garlic parmesan fries. Really, sometimes I just want to order a triple order of these and call it a meal . . . they are that good.

What most folks love here, though, is the beer. . .did we mention that? Ok, they serve more than 20 different draft beers, many of them local. This is why, as a diner, you may walk into the Free House and not be able to wade through the crowd to get to the podium to request a table. That crowd is here for the beer. And, can you blame them? After all, Free House is a pub and, as their website points out, ale and whiskey come before “fare.” So, even if you do end up here for the ale or whiskey, do check out the menu.

Find Free House Pub at 1902 Parmenter Street in Middleton. They are open from 11a.m. to Midnight, Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, feel free to visit from 11a.m. to 2:30 a.m. and from 11a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Happy hour happens from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
