Madison WI has been ranked #2 behind Wichita, Kansas in a list by Newsmax magazine of "Most Uniquely American Cities & Towns". This is the 129th such award won by Madison since 1994.

Newsmax magazine commissioned Peter Greenberg, author and NBC's "Today Show" travel editor, to compile the list. He reviewed 25 cities and rated them  using the following criteria (Madison's scores appear in parentheses):

  1. Hospitality (8 out of 10)
  2. Wholesomeness (8)
  3. Family-Friendliness (8)
  4. Business-Friendliness (9)
  5. Devotion to Religion (7)
  6. Culture (6)
  7. Community Activities (7)
  8. Scenic Beauty (9)
  9. Education (7)

The only other Wisconsin city on the list was Milwaukee, at No. 11.

"One of America’s most attractive cities," the magazine said, "Madison long has been known for academic excellence and outdoor amenities. The city also is gaining recognition as being seemingly recession-proof. That’s partly because of the number of government jobs, as well as positions in biotech. But more than that, Madison is a wonderfully livable place."

I agree that Wisconsin is a beautiful place with great people... That's what makes a great American town. When I attended college at DePauw in Greencastle IN we used to make road trips to Madison on a regular basis. The lake there is beautiful, and the town is a whole lot of fun. The Halloween parties were wild! People there really know how to have fun. If I could talk my wife into living somewhere cold, then Madison would definitely be high on the list of places to consider. But that's unlikely... we're probably too spoiled by San Diego weather at this point. Thanks for your post!
