Do you enjoy gardening? Then you would love a trip to the Allen Centennial Gardens. This is a public garden area that provides outdoor learning opportunities to strengthen your gardening skills. Teachings are held by the Horticulture Department of University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This garden is actually designed to function as an outdoor classroom for students and staff of the Horticulture Department. However, it also acts as a learning portal for the public. Communities, regions and professionals in the horticulture business, all utilize the garden area. Those from outside the state can also visit the garden, and take in the beauty that it provides.
About the Gardens
Allen Centennial Gardens is a total of 2.5 acres, and is home to hundreds of ornamental plants, which includes annuals, perennials, tropical and temperannuals flowers. There are deciduous trees and shrubs, as well as conifers. A total of 21 different themed gardens are available, which makes it a perfect place to visit. Both landscape architecture and design are offered, and brings diversity to the garden’s offerings.
You can visit the gardens 365 days a year, at any hour. At this point, the gardens are completely self-funded, and volunteering is an option. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. The garden’s function on funding that is provided, so the offerings will vary. Allen Centennial Gardens is a great place for a wedding, and permits for photography are available.

- Family Gardening Day – this event is sponsored by Science Alliance and is held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Smith Greenhouses, Steenbock Library and Allen Centennial Gardens on May 10 from 10 am to 2 pm.
- Hosta Sale – May 24 from 9 am to 12 pm.
- Special Plant Auction and Runway Show – June 14 from 5 pm to 8 pm.
