About Madison, WI

UW students relaxing on Memorial Union pierMadison, Wisconsin has long been synonymous with a great quality of life. Together with its natural beauty, top-rated schools, abundant cultural activities and diverse array of neighborhoods, Madison is more than a place to call home—it's a lifestyle!

We love living in Madison – well, actually the whole metropolitan Madison area. There’s no shortage of reasons why. It’s just that the entire region – Madison proper and its neighboring towns and suburbs – offers a quality of life you won’t find in many other places.

Money magazine named Madison the "Best Place To Live in America" in 1996 and "#1 Best Mid-Sized City to Live in the Midwest" in 1998. Rich in history, culture and natural beauty, Madison mixes casual sophistication with a distinctly Midwestern identity and appeal.

A melting pot since its 1829 founding, the city combines a vibrant sense of community and connectedness with cultural diversity, all in a modern small city setting. As state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin (go Badgers!), Madison draws national and international attention. Those institutions have helped buffer the entire region from periodic economic ups and downs, while constantly driving new business development.

Home and lifestyle choices are also diverse. City, country, luxury, rustic, single family, high density condos, warehouse loft – take your pick. Everyone you meet will tell you Madison's a great place to raise a family, build a business, or retire in style. Thankfully there are a wide variety of homes, condos, and live-work options available to suit even the most discriminating of tastes.

Madison, WI Lifestyles

A cosmopolitan city with a population now exceeding 243,000, Madison Wisconsin continues to delight by combining small city charm with a wide range of exceptional educational, cultural, sports and recreational opportunities. With its famous university, the U.W.-Madison, Madison's vibrant downtown, its famous "chain of lakes" (Lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, and Kegonsa), and over 200 parks and green spaces, Madison Wisconsin shines as one of the nation's most scenic cities and a favorite Midwestern getaway.

Two Lakes Divided by a City! Downtown Madison occupies the isthmus separating Lake Monona and Lake Mendota, with the capitol dome in the middle and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center dominating the Lake Monona shoreline. The lakes are highly regarded sport-fishing destinations despite being surrounded by modern life and development.

The isthmus also divides Madison into East and West Sides, each with its own charms. Some locals say the older East Side is the “real” Madison and more in keeping with the city’s original character. Newcomers won’t find that much difference on the West Side though much of the housing is newer due to available developable land. Early city planners recognized the area’s natural beauty. Today, a coalition of regional governments remains committed to smart growth and preservation of open spaces. The area’s 200-plus parks, biking trails, and conservation areas ensure continued accessibility to natural areas.

Despite stereotypes, there’s more than cheese to local culture and dining. Locavores and other foodies celebrate the nationally acclaimed Capitol Square farmers market. The Chazen Museum and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art host international traveling exhibitions in addition to their own permanent collections. Local music options range from the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society to – as any fan of post-punk ‘90s pop can tell you – the occasional appearance by homegrown legends Garbage.

If you prefer small-town life, FitchburgMiddleton, Verona, and about two dozen other communities have somehow retained their distinct Main Street America identities despite their close proximity to Madison. You won’t mistake any of them for sprawling master-planned suburban subdivisions.
