Vintage Homes & Architecture

What makes a home vintage? Admittedly, we kind of invented the term when it comes to home styles. Well, at least it's not considered an "official" home style as defined by the SCWMLS (South Central WI MLS). But it's a useful term when you think about the types of characteristics typically found in a home built between 1940 and 1970. What are some of the characteristics of vintage homes that people love? California bungalows offer cottage-like exteriors, cozy-feeling interiors, and large, inviting front porches. Cape Cod style homes are distintively square or rectangular one-story structures with gabled roofs and unadorned fronts. Contemporary style homes are easily recognized by their unusually placed windows, exceptionally clean lines, and atypical mix of materials. Originated by Frank Lloyd Wright, Prairie/Craftsman style homes are found in two distinct styles--boxy and symmetrical or low-profile and asymmetrical. Prairie styles are distinguishable by full-or partial-width porches framed by tapered columns, overhanging eaves, and exposed roof rafters
