What makes a home vintage? Admittedly, we kind of invented the term when it comes to home styles. Well, at least it's not considered an "official" home style as defined by the SCWMLS (South Central WI MLS). But it's a useful term when you think about the types of characteristics typically found in a home built between 1940 and 1970.
What are some of the characteristics of vintage homes that people love? California bungalows offer cottage-like exteriors, cozy-feeling interiors, and large, inviting front porches. Cape Cod style homes are distinctively square or rectangular one-story structures with gabled roofs and unadorned fronts. Contemporary style homes are easily recognized by their unusually placed windows, exceptionally clean lines, and atypical mix of materials. Originated by Frank Lloyd Wright, Prairie/Craftsman style homes are found in two distinct styles--boxy and symmetrical or low-profile and asymmetrical. Prairie styles are distinguishable by full-or partial-width porches framed by tapered columns, overhanging eaves, and exposed roof rafters
Vintage Homes & Lifestyles
Vintage homes are often located in the older part of Dane County cities, towns, and villages, making vintage homes typically more "walkable" than newer homes that are more often located on the edge of town or in a far-flung suburb. Like historic homes, vintage homes often come with a project or two. Thankfully we've got a great list of folks that can help if need be!
Vintage homes may possess certain issues that newer homes do not. Vintage homes are also in great demand throughout Dane County which means the best ones do go fast. Be sure to request a Lake & City Homes buyer agent who can bring hidden inventory to your attention, as well as represent your best interests when purchasing a vintage home.
