Stoughton History & Recreation
Perhaps you’ve driven behind a semi-truck pulling a trailer bearing the Stoughton logo. Yes, the manufacturer is named for its hometown. Transportation has played a significant role since the town’s founding in the mid-19th century as the Yahara River gateway to Madison and points north at a time when boats provided the primary mode of travel. Stoughton's vibrant and historic downtown boasts charming shops, galleries and restaurants, and the beautifully restored opera house is one of the few remaining second story theaters in the Midwest.
The largest of Madison’s outlying cities, Stoughton displays a sense of community and connectedness. The town still bears the influence of Norwegian immigrants who brought their families and traditions more than 100 years ago. Norwegian flags and rosemaling festoon the downtown area every year as Stoughton’s citizens gear up for Syttendemai (literally, the 17th of May), a 3-day, city-wide celebration of Denmark’s return of home rule to its northern neighbor. Be sure to try the lefse (Norwegian crepes) and cream puffs, but be on guard for local high school seniors taking turns pranking one another at this popular annual event.
Stoughton Schools
The Stoughton Area School District includes five schools serving about 3,400 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Though some facilities suffer from current economic conditions, the district’s low student-teacher ratio keeps parent satisfaction ratings high. Test scores from 2011 show students of all grades scoring consistently above the state average.
About half an hour from Madison to the south, like so many neighboring communities Stoughton provides access to both country charm and urban sophistication. Most of all, it offers a sense of community absent from too many suburban areas.
