Colonials

An offshoot of the Cape Cod style, Colonial homes feature a rectangular, symmetric design, second-floor bedrooms, clapboard siding, gabled roofs and occasionally three stories. Few styles have as many variations as the Colonial house. South Central Wisconsin is blessed to have nearly every variation of Colonial style home, from the Dutch to the Salt Box. Dutch Colonial Germans, or "Deustch", settlers in Pennsylvania founded the Dutch Colonial style which is dominated by a barn-like broad gambrel roof with flaring eaves. The New England Colonial style dubbed "Saltbox" gained its nickname due to its sharply sloping gable roof resembled boxes used for storing salt.
