Wheeler Heights Madison Real Estate & Homes
"Wheeler Heights is a conservation-minded, friendly Madison neighborhood with affordable housing. We love the parks, farmer's market & abundance of free, fun activities." -Wheeler Heights Resident
Wheeler Heights subdivision, located on Madison’s North Side in the Lake View neighborhood, lies just south of Cherokee Marsh, that living sponge that filters the runoff thru its wetland, cleaning the water that feeds Madison’s beautiful lakes. To the south is the wetlands of Warner Park, the home of the Madison Mallards baseball team. The beach and boat launch to Lake Mendota are located close by. In between these two incredible natural wetland features is the hill and woods of 41-acre Lake View Hill Park and the homes that make up a very special, nature-oriented neighborhood association called Lake View Hill. More About Wheeler Heights
The recent restoration efforts tested at Cherokee Marsh to restore oak savanna have brought back nesting red-headed woodpeckers! Cranes, bluebirds, wildflowers, and other plants are also recovering into the improved habitat. Similar efforts to restore native habitat are now being replicated in the Dane County Oak Woodland and Managed Meadow at the heart of Lake View Hill neighborhood.
Beyond the natural beauty of this location, there are a ton of cultural events happening on Madison’s North Side. The city recreation department operates a wonderful series of programs from a newer building at Warner Park. Dance, exercise, ceramics and other classes are available to the neighborhood. The Northside Farmer’s Market brings fresh food and community events such as fundraisers for the River Food Pantry, a uniquely popular community volunteer organization. Other unique Northside events are the zany fun nights out to the ballgame in the Duck Pond with the Mallards, the Monday night Summer Concert Series at Warner Park Shelter, and the organic plant sale by Community Groundworks at Troy Gardens.
Lake View neighborhood is 71.9% owner-occupied versus Madison’s 49.3%. Families with children make up a higher percentage than the average neighborhood in Madison (2010 census). Lake View neighborhood has grocery and childcare available along with a city library at LakeView Branch. Fire Station #10 provides local service. Gompers Elementary and BlackHawk Middle School are located near each other with the older children attending East High School. Lake View neighborhood is well-served with bus stops and its bike network, although nascent, is growing.
Lake View neighborhood is affordable and is a good choice for singles and families alike. Families with children needing more space will find the average price for a solidly built 1960-70’s home comes in well below many other Madison neighborhoods. And the natural and cultural amenities of this location are top-notch.
