Ranches

The ranch style originated in the mid-1930's. By the 1950's the ranch style home became a dominant housing choice. It is a one story shape generally with a low-pitched roof. Similar to the Spanish Colonial, Prairie, and Craftsman styles, Ranch homes are set apart by pitched-roof construction, built-in garages, wood or brick exterior walls, sliding, and picture windows. Ranch style homes have grown in popularity in recent years as people purchasing homes for longer holding periods seek to have the bulk of their living area on one level rather than on several floors separated by staircases. Related to the ranch style home are the bi-level, raised ranch, and tri-level.
