Middleton justifiably calls itself “the Good Neighbor City,” but that’s just the beginning. Hugging Lake Mendota’s northwest shoreline, Middleton has nearly everything that makes the region a great place to live. What Middleton itself doesn’t have itself can usually be found just minutes away – it’s a good neighbor to Madison’s West Side. It’s no surprise that Money Magazine ranked Middleton tops in its 2007 “Best Places to Live” listings.

The newer subdivision of Middleton Hills features homes with substantial Craftsman influence with a New Urbanism-influenced street plan. Developments immediately west of Middleton proper feature many attractive newer homes ranging from country estates to modern suburbia surrounded by century farms. Many area roads are named for pioneer families from Switzerland and Germany whose descendants still live and work on their original land. On the east side, luxury condominiums line country club fairways for those ready for more refined relaxation.

Middleton neighborhoods & shopping

A revitalized turn-of-the-20th century downtown offers substantial evidence of local character. With Victorian storefronts and historic train depot, downtown Middleton is also home to a craft brewery, many restaurants, converted warehouse lofts, and the National Mustard Museum, itself the campus for Poupon U. Popular Middleton subdivisions include Middleton Hills, Northlake Neighborhood, and Foxridge Hills as well as more than two dozen other subdivisions to choose from ranging from quaint in-town bungalows and picturesque Victorians to newer subdivisions sporting contemporaries, prairie craftsmans, ranches, and transitionals. These subdivisions include Baskerville Harbor, Blue Glacier Valley, Burmesters, Cardinal Point Estates, Cedar Ridge, Cherrywood, Enchanted Valley, Hidden Oaks, High Point Estates, Misty Valley, Noll Valley, Orchid Heights, Park Lawn, Parkside Heights, Prairie Home Estates, Sauk Prairie Estates, Shorecrest, Spring Hill Estates, Stonebrook Estates, Stonefield Village, and Sunset Ridge.

Middleton WI parks & recreation

Though civic leaders don’t openly crow about it, Middleton’s park system would make most cities jealous. Pheasant Branch Conservancy, contains many acres of old growth lowland hardwood forest with wetlands fed by a million-gallon-a-day spring. Home to a thriving community of threatened Blanding’s turtles and a nesting pair of bald eagles, the conservancy offers miles of tree-shaded creekside hiking and biking trails, many of them paved. Other notable public areas include: a dog park where, in the words of a recovering Manhattanite, “even the dogs are Wisconsin friendly”; public hunting and fishing grounds; a day-use state park with a swimming beach; and an in-town county park with overnight camping. You’ll also find indoor and outdoor aquatic centers, an outdoor tennis center, and a children’s splash park.

Middleton public schools

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is among the state’s highest rated. Active parental involvement keeps public education functioning at high levels despite classroom size concerns. Because the district includes a large geographic area, some students have longer bus rides.
