The town grew rapidly following the 1989 completion of the Beltline, the ring freeway surrounding the metro area's south and west sides. With shopping in its thriving Stoughton Road business district, McFarland is now primarily a bedroom community for people working on the Madison area’s east side. Continued growth is forecast for population, employment, and development in the region over next two decades. The annual McFarland Family Festival partners with local organizations to raise money for local not-for-profits. Attractions and events include a carnival, big top tent, triathlon and music stage, with the weekend-long event culminating with the Festival-Homecoming Parade down Main Street.
